In this CHAMP module, faculty educators will learn how to teach about Foley catheter use among hospitalized older adult patients. Learning objectives include becoming better able to teach about short and long-term risks of catheterization; performing a bedside evaluation of the need for catheterization and construct a plan for removal; differentiating the medical reasons for incomplete voiding; and analyzing catheter problems.
Teaching materials include a slide presentation with speaker's notes that is approximately 45 minutes. Bedside teaching triggers address indications for use; care and discontinuation; and medical reasons for inability to void. A pocket teaching card facilitates teaching at bedside. References and a sample session evaluation form are also provided.
